St. Joseph County At-a-Glance

•  County spans 467 square miles.

•  Fourth largest county in Indiana.

•  Population of 265,559.

•  In 1830, the Indiana State Legislature officially designated the county.

•  In 1831, South Bend became the county seat.

With South Bend, Indiana, as the cultural hub and economic center of a multi-county, bi-state region, St. Joseph County gives you comfortable, convenient living with easy access to regional opportunities. In fact, in less than an hour's drive you can find yourself at a beach along the sand dunes of Lake Michigan or, in the other direction, enjoying quaint Amish Country. From tranquil country vistas to the excitement of vibrant and revitalized downtowns, Greater South Bend/Mishawaka is a great place to live.

Here, you can actually live where you work, with average commute times of only 20 minutes. Our region offers many varied job opportunities for you and your family. You may also be surprised at the abundance of big city amenities in our area, but reassured to find that we still take the time to nod to our neighbors and welcome our newcomers.

We are a community of young people, a community of professionals and educators, a community steeped in the visual and performing arts, and a community with a variety of nationally recognized not-for-profits focused on the social safety net. We are a community  that cares.
